Research and Projects

Giraffe

Okatumba Wildlife Research would not be able to conduct any project without the acceptance and support of the farmers living in our research area. It took a certain amount of time and effort to gain the farmers' confidence, but luckily we have been successful. Most of the land owners are available for discussions at any time, and we have got the necessary access to their farmlands. Furthermore the farmers assist us in conducting game counts, mapping and long-term monitoring projects, setting box traps, etc.

The research program of Okatumba Wildlife Research offers the opportunity for the two initiators (Birgit Förster and Harald Förster, a biologist and a forester from Germany) to produce their PhD's. While Birgit Förster concentrates on behavioural ecology of the Namibian cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus), Harald Förster is responsible for compiling a master management plan and to test the suggested management strategies on a pilot basis.

Medium- and long-term projects

  • Large-scale farm survey
  • Vegetation survey
  • Monitoring of habitat conditions
  • Mapping (by means of GIS):
    o Rainfalls
    o Water places (natural, artificial)
    o Fences (stock-proof, game-proof)
    o Spatial distribution of game
    o Migration patterns
  • Long-term monitoring:
    o Large carnivores
    o Indigenous game species
    o Black rhino
    o Veld conditions
  • Game counts (road strip count four times a year)

As everyone can imagine our projects are extremely time consuming and expensive. So far the overheads are hardly covered by the income of Okatumba Wildlife Research. We would like to employ local people (tracking, telemetry, trapper etc.) to improve our research- and fieldwork. Donations help to finance not only the necessary needed employees, but also to cover the increasing expenses for fuel costs and vehicle maintenance as well as technical equipment.

Okatumba Wildlife Research is an Association not for gain, therefore any donation is tax-deductible.
